Living Smart Homes Program Testimonials

We make very little waste and usually don't put either the recycle bin nor the green bin out
The answer lies not so much with one big thing but a number of little things.

These are some of them.

1) We grow just about all our fruit and vegetables

2) We try to reduce buying but we do buy with these ideals: a) Shop infrequently b) Buy in bulk

3) Example of how we buy in bulk include
Meat - no polystyrene meat trays, buy arge bits cut up and stored in freezer
Milk - as powder makes 10L, left with cardboard container mulched
Coffee - large tin instant. Tin used (reuse)  for storage. Grow own coffee beans store in above.
Soap powder - bulk concentrate after 4 months 1 small box, mulched.

4) Compost - we have three large bins and compost garden refuse and all kitchen scraps. This includes coffee grounds, tea, citrus and meat / bones. A good compost will deal with these.

5) Paper – cardboard: Used as weed suppressors or mulch on gardens and paths. We can’t get enough and collect cardboard.

6) Tins - we do not use many, those we do use, we crush and find they take up little space.

6) Bottles / Jars. We make our own jams, preserves and pickles so we tend to reuse what jars we do get. We do not buy prepared food/sauces and so on in jars because we grown our own food. E.g. we don’t have tomato sauce bottles because we make similar from Brazilian cherries, we don’t have spaghetti sauce because it is easier to pick the ingredients from the garden. More fun too!
Wine bottles. These are reused as we make much of our own wine from garden produce- lemon, parsley and guava wines.
Soft drink bottles – don’t buy soft drink. But I had to ask people for their cast offs to store ginger beer and lemon beer.

7) Bread. Reuse bags for lunch bag, freezer bag

8) We have a policy of not buying products with excessive packaging.

9) We do take our own green bags

10) We do not buy take home take away. More likely to eat in café/ restaurant – Chinese, fish and chips, burger.Rarely buy shop pizza – make our own.

Conclusion.
We didn’t put the bins out last week and still the only thing in the  bin is one plastic bag with some oily paper from changing the oil in the mower. Admittedly, there are only the two of us, I guess when we had the kids at home there was more ‘stuff’ but as a family we have been keen on permaculture principles for many years and have tried to practise the three Rs.
